The staff of Churachandpur District Hospital on Thursday organised a peaceful protest at the Waiting Shed of the hospital, condemning a recent attack on its staff by armed miscreants at the hospital.
The medical staff displayed placards which read ‘Let us make the hospital a safe zone’, ‘stop unsafe acts to ensure safety’, ‘Stop, think and act’, ‘stop harassing medical personnel’ etc.
As per sources, a school girl studying in class VI was fatally hit by a two wheeler biker, leading the girl to be admitted at the ICU of the hospital with critical injuries, resulting in a coma on Tuesday.
Some miscreants with guns came to allegedly threaten the medical staff, and physically assaulted the medical staff and caused mayhem in the hospital, sources said.
Latest reports said that the injured schoolgirl has been airlifted at 251 base hospital, Guwahati on Thursday and is being treated at GNRC Hospital, Six Mile at present.
Her condition will be monitored by a specialist in neurology.
All staff irrespective of doctors, nurses, grade IV workers of Churachandpur District Hospital took part in the protest. Deputy medical superintendent of the hospital Dr Seanbawi Vaiphei said that their staff have been harrassed in many instances.
Their protest was carried out to stop such acts in the future and bring a safe and clean environment in the premises of the district hospital.
He also said that the protest was lifted following the assurance by the SP of Churachandpur to provide adequate security at the district hospital. He also thanked the SP of Churachandpur for assuring to provide adequate security.
Churachandpur Doctor Association (CDA) president Dr N Thangginmang said that the protest was organised to make an appeal that the working mechanism of medical staff should be allowed to do their work without disruption .
The CDA will always cater to the needs of the patients and they are backing up the efforts of the Hospital Administration today.
He also highlighted that such incidents had happened in the past as well, but the doctors and nurses continued to perform their duty for the sake of the patients, asking all to respect their integrity.
“Making intimidations in any form is uncalled for. The doctors and nurses are extremely uncomfortable in such a scenario. The Churachandpur District Hospital has been in shortage of supply after the present crisis startled in the state,” he said.
He further asked the people to understand that the hospital is being run with medicines and equipment donated by different churches and civil society organisations. The doctors and staff themselves are also donating, he said, urging all the patients, their caretakers and visitors to maintain guidelines of the medical department.
