The Manipur Congress on Wednesday strongly condemned the remarks made by the Army Chief who stated that there was no drone bombing in the state and there has been no physical evidence of both drone and rocket missile attacks.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra said “it is really unfortunate and we condemn the statement because there has been physical evidence of drone bombing and rocket missile attacks. The state home department has given that there have been use of hi-tech drone bombarding. Official orders have been made on this. The statement of the Army chief is contradictory to the present situation in the state. We really condemn the statement from our side.”

On the holding of two youths as hostage by militants in Kangpokpi district, Meghachandra also said “it is a total failure of law-and-order situation. Recently, we had a joint meeting with the CM and other legislators where we urged the CM to enforce the provisions of the Constitution and the laws of the land. We also urged him to take assistance from Home Minister Amit Shah to rescue the two youths with the help of state and central forces.”

“We are confused why the state government is unable to rescue the two youths and also why the home department has been helpless in helping the people of the state” Meghachandra said and questioned why the DGP has been sent to another district instead of asking his forces to act. DGP's visit to Kangpokpi shows his weakness, he added.

“The role of the Centre in resolving the crisis in the state is not serious. The unrest continues even more than one and a half year. There still is no sign of development and a better law and order situation and the administration has failed” he added.

Earlier, Congress leaders and workers paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi statue at Congress Bhavan on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.

CLP leader Okram Ibobi Singh said, “On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, we want to appeal that violence cannot bring a solution and violence has no place in a democratic country.

Killings cannot bring a solution and communities must engage in talks to bring a solution.”
Ibobi Singh also called to disarm both the two sides involved in the conflict to stop the violence. Centre and state should firstly strongly disarm those in possession of illegal weapons after which talks should come, he said.

Meanwhile, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Wednesday extended condolences over the unfortunate violent incident which unfolded between villagers of Hunphun and Hundung Thawaijao villagers, Ukhrul district which resulted in the three deaths and several other casualties.

Speaking to the media at Congress Bhawan, Imphal, MPCC president K Meghachandra stated that the land dispute was a long standing issue which was never properly resolved. He highlighted that villagers had filed complaints regarding the matter to district authorities concerned which they failed to look into.

“Why did the state authorities fail to reconcile the matter properly?” he questioned.

He pointed out that there had been discontentment among the locals regarding the conduct of Swacch Hi Seva programme in the disputed area since Tuesday.

He questioned why the district administration despite public discontentment greenlighted the conduct of the programme in the disputed area. “Why did the intelligence and district administration fail to take cognizance of the matter?” he asked.

He also lambasted the state and central forces for failing to rein in the situation timely and condemned the state authorities’ disregard to control the violence. “This shows that both administration along with law and order has completely collapsed in Manipur,” he said.

He further appealed to all concerned to rein in their emotion and let peace prevail in the region.

Meanwhile, former minister Samuel Jendai condemned the slow paced security measures of the state government and expressed discontentment over the fumbling law and order situation in Manipur.

“Let’s give peace a chance. The Christian ethics of love, peace and non-violence must prevail,” he said.

He stated that Manipur was reeling under intolerable turmoil as such he exhorted the people to walk in the direction of peace and refrain from untoward actions.
