Meitei/Meetei Tribe Union (MMTU) on Sunday met with various leaders, pressing for the waiver of loans, GST, and taxes, as well as a reduction in airfare costs, highlighting the severe economic challenges facing Manipur due to the ongoing crisis and urged immediate action to alleviate the financial burden on the people.
(MMTU) has submitted a memorandum to the Reserve Bank of India, urging the bank to consider waiving loans for affected borrowers, stated a release.
MMTU emphasised the severe economic downturn, citing the collapse of businesses, industries, and agriculture. These setbacks have left many residents unable to meet their loan obligations, it mentioned.
MMTU also called on the Ministry of Finance to suspend the collection of taxes and GST from Manipur’s residents, stressing the urgent need for relief as they grapple with economic hardship. The union further urged the government to implement measures that would safeguard the financial stability of the population, it stated.
Subsequently, MMTU also appealed to the Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities to consider subsidising airfare, as air travel has become the sole mode of transportation for those in the valley. The national highways, which pass through neighboring states, remain blocked due to the ongoing unrest, it added.
