In a statement issued on Sunday, the ANSAM said the Naga people welcomed “the 3rd August Framework Agreement that was signed between the two entities after barely two decades of negotiations with high hopes and expectations’’.

It also stated, this “historic agreement” was signed before the international audience at the residence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Richmond Road, New Delhi, that recognised the unique history and position of the Nagas. The Naga student body said the agreement “reveals that Nagas have an independence history and we are never part of India and Mayanmar (erstwhile Burma) either by conquest or by consent”. Further, the Framework Agreement officially recognised and acknowledged the Indo-Naga conflict as a “political conflict” and not an issue of “law and order” issue of India, the ANSAM added. “It also recognised and acknowledged the sovereignty of the Nagas wherein it agreed to share the sovereign power as defined in the competencies,” the ANSAM added.

Now, nine years have passed and the ANSAM said it is concerned by the continued delay in resolving this Indo-Naga political issue. As such, the Naga student body questioned the commitment and sincerity of the Indian leadership.

The ANSAM then called upon the Government of India for expediting the impending Indo-Naga peace talks and hammer out a negotiated settlement based on “Framework Agreement” recognising the Naga flag, constitution and integration’ as an inalienable rights of the Naga.

The ANSAM then reiterated that any settlement deviating from the national principle of the Nagas and their historical and political rights will not address the political aspirations of the Nagas.
