Amid increasing suicide cases in Manipur, cycle rally drives home ray of hope

World Suicide Prevention Day 2022: 49 cases of suicide were reported in Manipur in 2021 as against 44 in 2020, according to the recent statistics of the National Crime Records Bureau.

In a bid to create awareness on the growing number of suicide cases and the urgent need to curb them, a cycle rally with the theme ‘Creating Hope Through Action’ marked the World Suicide Prevention Day 2022 in Imphal Saturday.

The cycle rally, organised by the Psychiatry and Clinical Psychology Department, RIMS, Imphal, was flagged off at Kangla Western Gate by RIMS medical superintendent N Sanjib.

A poster dislpaying the slogan ‘Join Us for a Cycle Rally in Support of Suicide Prevention’ was carried along the rally which passed through Nagamapal and ended at the Department of Psychiatry, RIMS campus, Lamphelpat.

Speaking to the media, Dr Sanjib said that the objective of the cycle rally was to spread awareness to the public that suicide is preventable even as the numbers of suicide cases are increasing in the state.

HOD of the Department of Psychiatry, Dr Lenin, said that suicide cases in the state is a growing problem. Every 40 seconds someone takes their own life, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), he informed.

There were eight lakh suicide cases globally and that, as per reports, one attempt results in death out of every 20 suicide attempts. However, it is preventable by creating hope through action, Dr. Lenin said.

Dr Lenin said that psychological first aid should be given if anyone changes behaviour, is in depression, is lonely or shows frustration.

According to reports published in various newspaper of the state, suicide cases are increasing in the state over the last five years though many are not reported. Statistical studies of suicide case may be hard in the state, Dr Lenin said.

According to the recent National Crime Records Bureau figures, India recorded 1,65,033 cases of suicides in 2021 as compared to 1,53,052 in 2020. Shockingly, 49 cases of suicides were reported in Manipur in 2021 as against 44 in 2020.

It may be noted that the main causes of suicides were family problems and illness, which accounted for 33.2 per cent and 18.6 per cent of total suicide respectively during 2021.
