The All Manipur Gorkha Students’ Union (AMGSU) paid homage to martyr Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri on the occasion the 130th Saheed Diwas on Tuesday. It marked the day with a call to all citizens to strictly follow COVID-19 appropriate behaviour and not to burden frontline workers.
A function was held at his memorial complex at Kanglatongbi.
Chhetri was the first Gorkha martyr in India’s Freedom Movement. Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri led the contingent of native Gorkha soldiers for revolutionary Manipuri hero Yubraj Tekendrajit Singh. He was hanged to death by the British on June 8, 1891 at the Western Gate of Kangla.
The observation was attended by president, AMGSU LB Adhikari; pradhan Kanglatongbi GP Meena Bista; general secretary Rahul Rai Bogiko, Bharatiya Gorkha Parishang, Manipur Branch and few other members of Parishang. The observation was held following Covid appropriate behaviour.
All the AMGSU Units also observed Saheed Diwas in its respective units with minimum attendance.
The observation began with candle lighting, offering of floral tributes followed by observing a one-minute silence as a mark of tribute to the martyred freedom fighter.
Meanwhile, the AMGSU made a humble appeal to all the citizens of Manipur to be sincere in following Covid appropriate behaviours for the safety and wellbeing of the society.
It stated that the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has been harsh to all. Although the overall cases in India are going down, cases are on rise in Manipur.
It appealed to all the individuals concerned and organisations to stay at home and abstain from organising any kind of gathering, including parties, birthdays, and poojas, etc. It also appealed to all the individuals to respect all the frontline workers who have been fighting day and night to overcome the dreaded pandemic.
It further urged the people not to give the frontline workers extra burden by violating the SOPs and having high handedness towards them.
The union also appealed to the authority concerned that the rice quota meant for the eligible beneficiaries must be disbursed by the agents and authorities concerned, without any kind of deductions in all the Gorkha inhabited villages in the state.
It also urged private telecom companies like Airtel and Jio to regularly strive to provide better network services to customers during this health crisis as due to the network related issues, many students have been missing their online classes and the working individuals have been missing their work.
It also pointed out that ‘mobile hawkers’ riding motorcycles are roaming freely in Kanglatongbi and the adjoining villages, adding that until the challenges with respect to COVID-19 are over, the hawkers must not be allowed to enter inside the premises of the village.
