All Manipur Catholic Union condoles demise of Archbishop Joseph
The passing of Joseph Mittathany is an immense loss not only for the pious Catholic faithful, but also for the people of Manipur, stated AMCU in a condolence message.

The All Manipur Catholic Union (AMCU) on Wednesday extended its deep condolence on the demise of archbishop emeritus most reverend Joseph Mittathany, the first bishop of the Archdiocese of Imphal.
The passing of Joseph Mittathany is an immense loss not only for the pious Catholic faithful, but also for the people of Manipur, stated AMCU in a condolence message.
He became the first Bishop of Archdiocese of Imphal in the year 1980 and thereafter, when the diocese was upgraded to Archdiocese, he was appointed as the first Archbishop of Imphal and served from 1995 till 2006, it stated. He also served as president of North East Bishops Conferences (NEBC) from 1996 till 2006, it added.
It stated that he was admired for his wise pastoral stewardship, and he was instrumental in establishing several educational institutions, healthcare and social services in Manipur.
“His lifetime of exceptional leadership and priestly ministry will live on in the hearts and minds of all Christians from different works of life,” it mentioned.

On his passing away, AMCU celebrates his life and honour his memory of unwavering commitment and his faithfulness to Christ, it stated. AMCU also invited all the faithful to attend his funeral service which is scheduled to be held in St Joseph's Cathedral, Mantripukhri, Imphal on at 10 am Thursday.
