The Awang Sekmai Kanba Nupi Lup (ASKNL) on Sunday appealed to civil society organisations (CSOs) to cease fundraising activities in the Awang Sekmai area.
This request comes in amid the crisis in Manipur where the residents of Awang Sekmai have already borne the brunt of frequent attacks by Kuki militants and living in constant fear, stated a release.
ASKNL highlighted the mounting burden faced by the residents due to various CSOs soliciting donations in the region. Since the commencement of the crisis, the people of Awang Sekmai have been resiliently defending themselves and managing their expenses such as house-to-house fundraising campaigns, it stated.
However, recent donation drives by outside organisations have worsened the challenges faced by the people of the area, it mentioned.
ASKNL staged a sit-in protest addressing the strain caused by the CSOs seeking donations from the people of Awang Sekami. It also emphasizes that this issue has previously been raised in various local dailies and electronic media.
ASKNL warned of intense agitations if these fundraising activities continue. The residents of Awang Sekmai are enduring a difficult period, grappling with both the communal crisis and the additional financial burden brought on by external fundraising initiatives, it stated.
ASKNL’s appeal to CSOs to halt fundraising in the area reflects the urgency of alleviating the hardship faced by the local residents during these trying times.
