A truck driver and handyman who were allegedly abducted have been reportedly released after irate locals of Khurai under the aegis of Khurai Social Youth Club (KSYC) blocked the Lamlong bazar in Imphal East from Sunday morning in protest against the incident.
A sit-in protest was staged in the middle of the Imphal-Ukhrul road at the Lamlong bazar. Moreover, markets, establishments and shops in and around Lamlong bazar were made to shut-down as a part of the protest.
Truck driver Thangjam Pal from Khurai Puthiba Leikai and his handyman Maibam Mani of Khurai Chingangbam Leikai were alleged to be abducted by the ZUF cadres on May 19 from Nungba area in Tamenglong district, reportedly in connection with an unsettled monetary demand with one contractor Takhelmayum Robin who hired them to transport fertiliser from Jiribam on May 18.
Soon after the imposition of the bandh at the Lamlong bazar, a team of Imphal East district police rushed to the spot to prevent any unwanted eventualities with the protestors and the commuters.
As the protestors blocked the Lamlong bazar road, commuters took diversion through the various inter village roads which are within the Imphal-Ukhrul road. However, emergency and essential services were allowed to surpass the road block. There was no sign of any eventualities during the protest till the filing of this report.
The people of Khurai condemn the frequent abduction and killings of drivers who are at the essential services by proscribed militant groups for the sake of unsettled ransom money with contractors, said president of KSYC Yumnam Ronindro while speaking to the media.
He also expressed strong discontent against the contractor (Robin) for not giving any update or information to the family members of the victims or to the local club regarding the abduction.
“The driver and handyman were hired by Robin for his job and they were abducted in connection with unsettled ransom due between him and the militant groups. Robin should at least not run away from the issue,” he added.
Drawing attention of the authorities concerned to immediately release the driver and the handyman, the president warned to launch intensive forms of agitation with support of all sections of the public if they are not released immediately.
Later in the afternoon at around 4 pm, Pal and Mani were reported to have been released and were stationed at a safe area in Noney.
Soon after getting the information, the protestors withdrew the agitation. Till the filing of this report, they are waiting for the return of Pal and Mani by sitting at the roadside.
