As many as 7,506 aids and assistive devices amounting to Rs 1.30 crore were distributed to 1,197 PwDs and senior citizens of Bishnupur district under the Samajik Adhikarita Shivir programme at Kyamba Ningshing Shanglen of Bishnupur district on Sunday.
The assistive devices include high end items like tricycle, smart cane, wheelchair, hearing aids machines, knee braces, spectacles and dentures among others.
On the occasion, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Pratima Bhoumik said that the BJP-led government was committed to the welfare of PwD and is always ready to extend any kind of support to to empower them.
Bhoumik said that under the vision of ‘sabka-saath sabka-vikas sabka-vishwas sabka-prayas’ the government is committed towards the empowerment of vulnerable sections of the society, leaving no stone unturned to make a new India with inclusive development.
She informed that the Right to Person with Disability Act 2016 implemented by the BJP led government has enhanced the rights and entitlements to PwDs.
Under this act, the categories of disability are now increased from seven to 21, reservation in government jobs has been increasing from 3 per cent to 4 per cent and 3 per cent to 5 per cent in educational institutes, she said.
Talking on the Manipur context, Bhoumik informed that 28 government offices have been in progress to make them “barrier free offices for PwDs.”
She further said that the Central government is very sensitive towards the empowerment of PwD and various initiatives have been taken by the ministry in all the areas whether it is sports, skill development, education, or infrastructure for making inclusive growth of PwD.
She also lauded the commitment and efforts of the PwD in many aspects despite their physical challenges. The most medals bagged by the country in sports are in the Paralympic, she added.
The Union MoS also expressed her happiness at Mirabai and Bindyarani bagging a gold and a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games.
“It is indeed a proud moment for the country and a day of happiness,” she added.
The function was also attended by ministers K Govindas, Th Basanta and H Dingo; MLAs T Robindro, Th Shanti and I Nalini Devi among others.
