Amid lockdown in Manipur, the 20th death anniversary of Arambam Somorendra was observed as “Martyrdom Anniversary” on Wednesday, following COVID-19 pandemic guidelines and protocols at Khurai Nandeibam Leikai, Imphal East.

The observation was jointly organised by the Arambam Somorendra Trust and the Social Standard Club, Khurai Salanthong.

Speaking on the sidelines of the observation, member of Arambam Somorendra Trust, S Samu said the death anniversary has been observed annually with mass gathering of people but due to the ongoing lockdown, it was observed as a simple ritual function. He said the annual anniversary has been organized in commemoration of the contributions made by Somorendra.

Scores of people paid floral tribute to the memorial site where a bust of Arambam Somorendra had been installed.

Meanwhile, Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) also observed the anniversary at MIMS department hall. The ceremony was organised following WHO COVID-19 guidelines.

Thoudam Robindro, MUSU; president of AMSU, Peter Laishram and advisor of Manipur University Human Resources Development Committee (MUHRDC), Khundrakpam Jimmy attended  the function as president, chief guest and guest of honour respectively.

As a part of the programme, floral tributes were paid to the photograph of Arambam Somorendra after observing a two-minute silence in honour of the departed soul. Moreover, a voluntary blood donation programme was also held at RIMS.

Our Jiribam correspondent has added that the 20th death anniversary of Lamyanba Arambam Somorendra was observed by the Jiri Development Organisation (JDO), JIMPAL, PPANL, CADA and AMSU in a simple function held at the conference hall of JDO on Wednesday morning.

Floral tributes were paid to the portrait of Arambam Somrendra during the observation. Due to COVID-19 lockdown, the observation was toned down.

JDO volunteers who have been taking part in screening of Manipur returnees at Jiribam railway station were honoured by presenting gifts as part of the observation.
