The 15th World Bamboo Day 2024 began at the Chiang Mai University in Thailand on Wednesday, hosted by the university under the theme “Developing bamboo value chain with SDG goals”.
Attended by 150 delegates from 22 countries, Manipur was represented by Kamesh Salam, founder chairman of World Bamboo Day who is also an international bamboo specialist and R David Boyes, an entrepreneur.
Addressing the event, Kamesh Salam said the celebration of World Bamboo Day was initiated to raise global awareness of the importance of bamboo. “Today, it is a beacon for sustainable development, environmental protection, and economic empowerment,” he said.
He also said that the idea and vision to celebrate the day 15 years ago has become a global movement, with bamboo-based industries flourishing across continents and governments recognizing its value in green economies.
This year’s theme, “Developing bamboo value chain with SDG goals” could not be more fitting, Kamesh said, adding that one could see bamboo becoming a fundamental part of construction, housing, agriculture, and even textiles.
He also spoke on how countries are incorporating bamboo into their national policies and development frameworks as a means to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
Kamesh further said that the event celebrates a solution to the pressing challenges we face from deforestation and soil erosion to the urgent need for renewable resources and eco-friendly materials.
“But as we celebrate, we must also challenge ourselves to look to the future. How can we continue to innovate with bamboo? How can we make sure that this incredible resource is available for future generations? How can we bring bamboo to the forefront of the green revolution?”, he said.
Stating that they are witnessing a global bamboo renaissance from Thailand to Africa, from Latin America to Europe and across Asia, he encouraged everyone to take today as an opportunity to learn, to collaborate, and to commit to harnessing the power of bamboo for a sustainable future.
Lastly, he called for joining hands to make the United Nations (UN) declare World Bamboo day in UN recognition as an International Day on bamboo.
The event, to be held till September 21, was also attended by Michel Abadie, president, World Bamboo Organisation
