Indian National Congress (INC) candidate S Manaoton in Manipur said that the present government is not the people's government as most leaders are giving priorities on making their own gains by corruption and supporting drug smugglers instead of bringing welfare for the people.

The INC candidate was speaking at the reception of around 1,400 new Congress workers, who had resigned from BJP, at the residence of INC candidate of Naoriya Pakhanglakpa assembly constituency S Manaoton at Mekola bazar, Imphal West on Saturday.

Manaoton said the leaders of the present government are shouting to uproot corruption and drugs but most of them are involved in the practice. He expressed appreciation to the newly joined, more than 1,400 workers. They joined after 780 BJP workers had joined Congress on Friday.

Candidates should not encourage their workers to commit poll-related violence, but should rather continue its election campaign with peace and cooperation, he added.

With support from former MLA of the assembly constituency, RK Anand who was also a BJP aspiring candidate, it will be easy for the people to choose the right candidate in the 2022 election, said Manaoton.

President of Naoriya Block Congress Committee, Nandeibam Sangoijao said that no welfare for the assembly constituency can be achieved by giving votes to the candidate who had been already declared as a psychiatric patient.
