A team of Churachandpur district police on Wednesday arrested a man in possession of more than 1 kg of suspected brown sugar that was found hidden inside secret compartments of two four wheeler vehicles.
In a press meet held at the office of Churachandpur SP on Friday, Churachandpur SP Shrivanand Surve said that based on a tip off, a team of district police on Wednesday raided the residence of one Seikholen Vaiphei, 42, son of late Thangkhokam Vaiphei at Kipgen Veng at Tuibong, Churachandpur. The team conducted the raid in the presence of the executive magistrate and the public, he added.
He said that the team found two bolero cars both in dark green colour, with one having no registration number while the other bearing two registration numbers, AS 01 BD 6554 at the rear and MN 06L 2907 at the front.
Upon inspecting the suspicious vehicles, the team found 44 soap cases containing suspected brown sugar, packed in a white coloured sack near the front passenger seat of one the vehicle, he added. The suspected brown sugar weighed 528 grams, excluding the weight of the soap cases, he continued.
The police team arrested the individual and seized the suspected brown sugar, the two bolero cars along with a Vivo mobile phone following proper seizure memo, the SP said. He further said that on questioning, Seikholen Vaiphei revealed that the illegal items were procured the morning of the raid. The arrested individual also mentioned that the contrabands were from Myanmar, he said.
The SP also informed that the police also conducted an extensive inspection of the seized vehicles and found 56 more soap cases containing 670 grams of suspected brown sugar inside a hidden compartment of one of the vehicles.
The total weight of the seized contrabands came up to 1,198 grams which is valued at about Rs 35 lakh in the international market, he added.
The Churachandpur police filed a case under FIR No. 142(09)2022 CCP-PS under section 21(c) NDO and PS Act for further investigation, he informed.
SP Shrivanand Surve also extended appreciation to the Churachandpur police additional SP and OC for their efforts to make the operation successful.
