The Congress on Thursday announced its first list of 125 candidates, including 50 women, for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Among the candidates are Asha Singh, Unnao rape victim’s mother, and Poonam Pandey, an ASHA worker who was allegedly beaten by the police while trying to meet Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Shahjahanpur in November, 2021.
Announcing the first list of the 125 Congress candidates at a vitul press conference, party leader Priyanka Gandhi said that the list includes 50 women candidates.
"This is a historic initiative. Forty per cent of the candidates are women and 40 per cent are youths," Priyanka Gandhi said.
Asha Singh has been fielded from Bangarmau, Unnao.
"We have given them a chance to continue their struggle and take the power through which they were suppressed and oppressed, take that power in their hands and fight their fight," Priyanka Gandhi said.
Priyanka Gandhi said, "Our list is delivering a new message. The message is that if you are tortured then you have the power to fight for your rights and Congress party in Uttar Pradesh will give you this power, support you so that you can fight your fight".
"Change is certain when the voices of struggle and making new politics come together. Change is certain when we walk together with the determination to win UP. UP will fight and will win," the Congress leader added.
