PM Narendra Modi conveys to Russian President Putin India's concern for safety of Indians in Ukraine

PM Modi appealed for immediate cessation of violence and called for concerted efforts from all sides to return to the path of diplomatic negotiations and dialogue.

In the wake of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday appealed for immediate cessation of violence and conveyed to Russian President Vladimir Putin that India attaches highest priority to the safe exit of Indians in Ukraine and their return to India, official sources said.

According to a PMO statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday briefed Prime Minister Modi about the recent developments regarding Ukraine. In view of it, the prime minister reiterated his long-standing conviction that the differences between Russia and the NATO group can only be resolved through honest and sincere dialogue.

The prime minister appealed for immediate cessation of violence and called for concerted efforts from all sides to return to the path of diplomatic negotiations and dialogue. He also sensitised the Russian president about India's concerns regarding the safety of Indian citizens in Ukraine, especially students, and conveyed that India attaches highest priority to their safe exit and return to India.

The two leaders agreed that their officials and diplomatic teams would continue to maintain regular contacts on issues of topical interest.

Russian troops launched the attack on Ukraine early Thursday soon after President Putin announced military operation in Ukraine in his televised speech.
