On the occasion, the Jal Shakti Ministry, under the Swachh Bharat Mission - Grameen (SBMG), promotes awareness on access to safe sanitation and felicitates districts and states for making significant contributions towards Swachhata.

Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat along with the Minister of State, Rattan Lal Kataria felicitate top districts and states with ‘Swachhata Puraskar’ through a virtual event. Given the prevailing Covid-19 scenario, awards ceremony this year is being organized virtually with awardees connecting via online platforms, the Jal Shakti Ministry said in a release.

The ministry informed in a release that Phase 2 of SBMG was launched early this year for sustaining the gains made under Phase 1 (2014-19) with focus on ODF Sustainability and Solid and Liquid Waste Management (SLWM).

The ministry also stated that various campaigns focusing on construction and beautification of Community Sanitary Complexes (CSCs) have been undertaken countrywide over the past one year like Swachh Sunder Samudayik Sauchalay (SSSS) and Samudayik Sauchalay Abhiyan (SSA).

Meanwhile, the United Nations tweeted: "Sustainable sanitation is resilient to climate change and safely processes bodily waste. Toilets, combined with clean water and good hygiene, form the strongest defence against #COVID19 and future disease outbreaks".

The World Toilet Day is a United Nations Observance on November 19 that “celebrates toilets and raises awareness of the 4.2 billion people living without access to safely managed sanitation. It is about taking action to tackle the global sanitation crisis and achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030,” WHO states.

It states: “Climate change is getting worse. Flood, drought and rising sea levels are threatening sanitation systems – from toilets to septic tanks to treatment plants. Everyone must have sustainable sanitation that can withstand climate change and keep communities healthy and functioning. Sustainable sanitation systems also reuse waste to safely boost agriculture and reduce and capture emissions for greener energy”.

Safe sanitation is a must for all, especially during the pandemic. Every household, every institution, every place, no doubt needs clean toilets and clean surrounding for a healthy community living.
