As India celebrates the 13th National Girl Child Day, the nation salute the girl child.

The Union government salutes every girl child of the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said and lauded all those working towards empowering the girl as India celebrates the 13th National Girl Child Day Sunday - January 24.

"On National Girl Child Day, we salute our #DeshKiBeti and the accomplishments in various fields," the prime minister tweeted.

The National Girl Child Day, an initiative of the Union Women and Child Development Ministry is being observed every January 24.

Giving focus on the development and welfare of the girl child, the Central government has launched several initiatives on empowering the girl child, including access better healthcare and education and improving gender sensitivity, Modi said.

"Today is also a day to especially appreciate all those working towards empowering the girl child and ensuring she leads a life of dignity and opportunity," the prime minister said in another tweet.

The National Girl Child Day was first observed on January 24, 2008, with the purpose to spread awareness among people about all the inequalities girls face in the Indian society.
