Group Captain Varun Singh, lone survivor of IAF chopper crash dies

On December 8, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 11 armed forces personnel were killed after their Mi-17V5 Air Force helicopter crashed near Coonoor.

Group Captain Varun Singh, the lone survivor of the IAF chopper crash near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu that killed Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife and 11 others, succumbed to injuries on Tuesday at a military hospital in Bengaluru.

"IAF is deeply saddened to inform the passing away of braveheart Group Captain Varun Singh, who succumbed this morning to the injuries sustained in the helicopter accident on 08 Dec 21. IAF offers sincere condolences and stands firmly with the bereaved family," the Indian Air Force tweeted.

On December 8, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 11 armed forces personnel were killed after their Mi-17V5 Air Force helicopter crashed near Coonoor.

Several leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to extend their condolences over the demise of Group Captain Varun Singh.

"Group Captain Varun Singh served the nation with pride, valour and utmost professionalism. I am extremely anguished by his passing away. His rich service to the nation will never be forgotten. Condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti," PM Modi tweeted.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said he is "pained beyond words".

"Pained beyond words to learn of the demise of IAF pilot, Group Captain Varun Singh. He was a true fighter who fought till his last breath. My thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and friends. We stand firmly with the family, in this hour of grief," the Defence minister tweeted.

"My heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of Group Captain Varun Singh. This is a sad moment for the country. We all are with you in this grief," Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also wrote on Twitter.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh also tweeted, "Deeply saddened to hear that Group Captain Varun Singh, the lone survivor of the IAF Chopper crash, succumbed to his injuries.  My deepest condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace".
