Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched the Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav which will begin from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad to mark 75 years of India's Independence.
In a series of tweets, the prime minister said:
"Today’s Amrit Mahotsav programme begins from Sabarmati Ashram, from where the Dandi March began. The March had a key role in furthering a spirit of pride and Aatmanirbharta among India’s people. Going 'Vocal For Local' is a wonderful tribute to Bapu and our great freedom fighters.
"Buy any local product and post a picture on social media using 'Vocal For Local'. A Charkha will be installed near Magan Niwas at Sabarmati Ashram. It will rotate full circle with each Tweet related to Aatmanirbharta. This shall also become a catalyst for a people’s movement".
Modi visited Sabarmati Ashram and Hriday Kunj, the house in the Ashram where Mahatma Gandhi lived with his wife Kasturba from 1918 to 1930, and paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi.
Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh also took to Twitter on Saturday and called upon the people in the state to join the country in the celebration of 75 years of India’s Independence.
“Let us join the country in the celebration of 75 years of India’s Independence #AzadiKaAmrutMahotsav by resolving to do 75 works that serve the society as a tribute to our martyrs,” Biren tweeted.
The prime minister said the 75th anniversary celebrations of India's Independence will continue till August 15, 2023.
