Manipur Health and Family Welfare Minister Sapam Ranjan on Saturday stressed on the urgency to conduct meticulous research and study regarding the rise in cases of kidney-related diseases in Manipur.
Dr Ranjan was speaking at the workshop on ‘Strengthening Organ Donation and Transplant Processes’ held at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal.
The minister said around 400 to 500 patients from Manipur undergo kidney transplantation procedures annually. Manipur has the highest number of kidney patients compared to other states of the country, he added.
“As such, doctors and subject experts in the field need to conduct detailed study in the field and ascertain why the numbers are so high in Manipur,” Ranjan said.
The health minister also informed that the Covid 19 mock drills for Manipur will be conducted on April 10 and 11 as per the instruction of the Union Health Ministry.
He stated that move had been taken up in connection with slight increase in Covid cases across the country. The mock drills will prepare the healthcare system for any eventualities, he added.
Ranjan further pointed out that district residency programme for MBBS students will be initiated according to the National Medical Council guidelines. He exuded confidence that the initiative will aid creating a robust healthcare system in Manipur.
The minister also sought the cooperation of the medical institutes in the state to make the programme a grand success.
Ranjan maintained that the state government will strive relentlessly to improve the healthcare system in the borders and hill regions of Manipur. Every aspect of the system starting from primary to the top medical institutions in Manipur will be checked, he added.
On the occasion, he stated that organ donation and transplantation is necessary to save and improve the lives of people who need it.
He maintained that the government will initiate measures to provide such facilities in the state and further extended gratitude to JNIMS for successfully conducting its first kidney transplant procedure which was financially covered by the government.
Meanwhile, JNIMS director Laishram Deben informed that a facility for Coronal Transplant procedure will be started at JNIMS very soon. He stated that the institute will strive to provide groundbreaking medical treatment and maintain high treatment standards.
