‘Need to find ways to adapt indigenous art forms’

To preserve the dying indigenous performing arts of Manipur in modern society, there is a need to conduct workshops on it, Manipur State Kala Akademi secretary Lourembam Kishworjit said on the occasion of Festival of Manipuri Folk Songs - Khunung Eshei - in Imphal East on Saturday.

He was delivering the chief guest speech at the celebration of the third Festival of Manipuri Folk Songs (Khunung Eshei) at Khurai Kala Bidya Bhavan Cultural Hall in Imphal East on Saturday. It was organised by the Mamataz Manipuri Dance and Music Centre (MMDMC) under the aegis of Sangeet Natak Akademy, New Delhi.

The secretary said that every performing arts originated as a result of necessities and situations of a civilisation; all of them were very popular at a specific era but many are in a dying stage due to losing popularity with the continuous changes in a civilisation.

He further pointed out that organising such a festival is indeed a great initiative to preserve the dying art forms. He also lauded the MMDCM for their immense contribution towards preserving the various dying art forms of Manipur.

The performance of ‘Khunung Eshei’ was given by W Puja Chanu and W Sonia Chanu of MMDMC, L Binita Devi of Sanakhutthek Cultural Academy and T Loijingkhombi Chanu of Sheishak Sheitam Sanglen with Th Abom Meitei as Pena Sheihou.

A one-minute silence was also observed in solidarity and condolence to the victims and bereaved families of the Marangjing landslide tragedy.

The function was attended by president of Khurai Kala Bidya Bhavan RK Narjit Singh as guest of honour, while president of MMDMC M Chandra Singh presided the function.
