Repoll recommended in nine polling stations; record 88% voter turnout in first phase Manipur polls 2022

One of the unique features of the Manipur Assembly election 2022 was that 79 and 381 polling stations were earmarked as Model and Women polling stations respectively for Phase I election.

As many as nine polling stations in Churachandpur district have been recommended for repoll, the district election office said Wednesday.

Of the total nine polling stations, three are in Thanlon constituency, four in Henglep and two in Singhat.

In Thanlon, polling was recommended in 56/5 Songsang Mission School, 56/10 Maite ME School, 56/19 Tinsuong ME School. In Henglep, repoll will be held in 57/20 Majuron Kuki, 57/34 Khoirentak, 57/39 Molsang and 57/49, while repoll was ordered in 60/36 Teikot and 60/43 in Singhat.

The final voter turnout of the first phase elections was recorded at 88.63 per cent of the total 12,09,439 voters. Voting was conducted across 38 assembly constituencies on Monday.

The total voter turnout of male was 87.29 per cent and 89.96 per cent for female voters.

Senior persons, youths, Person with Disabilities, Transgender, first time voters and others cast their votes at respective polling stations. For the first time IT applications were used to book wheelchairs and checking queue waiting time periods at polling stations, especially for PwD electors and elderly persons, said a statement issued by the CEO Manipur.

Around 176 wheelchairs were booked through the IT application. In most of the polling stations, special efforts were made to ensure hassle free voting by elderly voters resulting in over 97 per cent of voters with 100+ age, it said.

According to the statement, one of the unique features of the 2022 election was 79 and 381 polling stations were earmarked as Model and Women polling stations respectively for Phase I election. The said polling stations were decorated with flowers colourfully.

It further mentioned that over 90 per cent transgender voters cast their votes. However, in Imphal East district, each transgender voters were given certificate signed by District Electoral Officer (DEO).

Besides, a total of 247 out of 253 SoO cadres voted from the 13 designated camps spread in Churachandpur, Pherzawl, Bishnupur, and Kangpokpi. The Commission had directed special arrangements for their voting which were made at each of the Polling stations for their voting through the postal ballot.

All polling teams have safely returned to the reception centres and the EVM/VVPAT have been sealed in the strong rooms in presence of the observers and the polling agents and placed under the three-tier security cover.

Presiding Officers and EVM machines of 17 Polling Stations of 55-Tipaimukh Constituency were airlifted from Jiribam. The machines will be opened only on the date of Counting in presence of the Election Agents, it said.

Scrutiny of Form-17A and other election related documents has been carried out for all Phase-I Assembly Constituencies by the Returning Officer and the Observers in presence of the Candidates/election agents.

The statement further said nothing untoward has been observed for majority of the ACs. Minor incidents reported for a few polling stations were examined and found that none of them actually had any detrimental impact on the poll process and the votes polled are safely stored and secure in the machines. However, stray incidents of damaged EVMs have been reported and re-poll has been recommended for those Polling Stations, it said.

An adequate arrangement for COVID safe election was taken up. Scanning of each voter, provision of hand glove, adequate sanitizers, queuing system under COVID protocol, etc. have been a visual delight in the Polling Stations about the safety preparations under the Election Commission of India.

Voting by COVID suspects/positive person under strict COVID protocol by wearing PPE took place in the last hour of the poll. The bio-medical waste generated therein was systematically disposed of as per the guidelines, the CEO added.
