Taking into consideration the potential of Manipur University of Culture in promoting arts and culture and other areas, Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) demanded the authority concerned to upgrade Manipur University of Culture (MUC) as a central university.
In a release, DESAM stated that MUC was established in 2015 to promote and preserve the rich cultural heritage of Manipur and ensure continuity in making further contributions. Over the centuries, the culture of Manipur remains a guiding light, which influences the culture of entire South East Asia through cultural interaction and exchanges, it stated. The contribution of Manipur in the field of performing arts, sports and in the field of intangible culture is recognised all over the world, it added.
It further stated that in a short span of five years, despite severe resource constraints, MUC contributed immensely with its unique methodology developed in view of the uniqueness of its various Art forms. Rasa Dance, Sankritana, Thang Ta and other related forms of performing arts including art forms of many tribes are more structured now, it stated. However, it is also an undeniable fact that resource constraints are a major hindrance to achieve the aims and objectives, it added.
The state government in its efforts to strengthen the endeavor of MUC, allotted 118 acres (38.081 hac.) of land. However, that land remains unutilized due to paucity of funds, it added.
It stated that Manipur as a state and Manipur University of Culture, as the center of cultural resources and activities inherently possesses immense strength as ‘ Culture’ is an essential element in our relationship with East Asia.
Concerning this, DESAM believed that the conversion of Manipur University of Culture into a Central University will not only ensure smooth flow of funds, essential for promotion and preservation of cultural heritage and strengthening the performing arts but also to ensure better coordination with East Asian countries.
The matter was also presented in the upper house of Parliament by MP Leishemba Sanajaoba at the recently concluded monsoon session of the Parliament.
