Demanding four per cent reservation for Meetei-Pangal students in higher education (general course), students of Mayang Imphal Bengoon Higher Secondary School demonstrated in front of the school at Mayang Imphal in Imphal West on Saturday.
The protest was taken up under the banner of All Manipur Muslim Students' Organisation (AMMSO) and its like-minded student bodies, stated AMMSO in a release.
It said that since 2006, the Meetei-Pangal were given the privilege of four per cent in professional courses and government jobs. Unfortunately, the reservation was not given for the higher education courses, it said, adding that it has become a reason for acute backwardness for the minority Meetei-Pangal.
The four per cent reservation is the only way to uplift the minority community and the steps to make an egalitarian society, the release said.
Stating that various agitations will be taken up by AMMSO and its like-minded bodies until the demand is fulfilled, the release sought cooperation and support from all the people of Manipur in the process of demanding the four per cent reservation.
