Six different student bodies namely Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), All Manipur Students Union (AMSU), Manipur Students Federation (MSF), Kangleipak Students Association (KSA), Students Union of Kangleipak (SUK) and Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup (AIMS) drew the attention of the state government towards making a prompt interim arrangement for a vice-chancellor in-charge of the Manipur University.
In a joint press release signed by respective presidents of the six student bodies, it stated that the Manipur University under the centre is now running without a vice-chancellor for more than a week now.
In the release, the student bodies have questioned the authority concerned if they treated the people of the state as second class citizens.
The former administrator of the varsity, Jarnail Singh has been removed from his post on November 30 as per an order issued by the Manipur High Court and since then the Union Ministry of Education from its side has failed to appoint a regular VC or VC in-charge at the Manipur University, the release said.
It also added that the result of the interview taken for appointment of regular VC for MU is still pending after the former VC, AP Pandey had filed a case at the Delhi High Court. Removing the administrator from MU has literally turned the varsity into an institution without a father figure.
The release also recalled accounts of unwanted issues that MU had gone through like attack on students and arrest of professors.
Due to lack of a VC in MU, the academic work has been affected, thereby creating fear that it may put the career of students at risk, to which the six students’ bodies said that Union Ministry of Education must take responsibility for the consequences, the release said.
The release strongly drew the attention of the state chief minister and governor over the matter.
