Sentinel College, Ukhrul on Saturday observed its silver jubilee at Ukhrul town hall which was flagged off by Shanngam Shaliwo, DFO, Ukhrul who also released balloons and declared the jubilee celebration.
Dr S Jibonkumar Singh, Director, College Development Council, Manipur University and Fr. Parvis, Principal of St. Joseph College, Ukhrul, unveiled the jubilee plague and released the Jubilee Magazine 2022 entitled “Footprints” respectively.
The daylong event began with the blowing of jubilee trumpet by guru AS. Rawung. KSA, Lurstep, principal of Sentinel College welcomed and introduced the dignitaries.
DFO Shanngam congratulated the founding members, college principal, students, teaching and non-teaching staff, alumni of the college on the auspicious occasion of the 25th years of its existence imparting education.
It is not only a time for celebration but equally a time for thanksgiving, he said, adding that the word education has been heard umpteen times but what is important is to understand the true meaning of quality education and work towards ensuring the same.
Education doesn’t just come from text books and it is a lifelong and continuous process. “In our education system today, value-based is missing and therefore a time is ripe for all us to join hands together and work towards imbibing this quality. Good moral discipline, honesty, respect for elders and teachers, et al are some of the values that we all must strive for”, he added.
As part of the celebrations, two-minute silence was observed in remembrance of its two founding members namely (L) SK Victor, who is also the former principal of the college and (L) Haodharlong Jajo.
The programme was attended by founding members, alumni, students, teaching and non-teachings staff of Sentinel college, parents, principals and teachers of various colleges and schools, TKS and TNL representatives and well-wishers.
Dr Jibonkumar Singh congratulated the college for coming thus far, educating students and inviting him to be part of this auspicious silver jubilee celebrations. He then exhorted students of the college to work hard as the reputation and glory of the college lies in their hands.
“Every student must have a textbook. But your teachers are your best textbook and no textbook can replace teachers,” he advised, while urging teachers to be the best textbooks for their students and make them feel that their teachers are the best.
As part of the celebrations, Shimreingam Horam, a college alumnus, Not Funny band and Yursari Ngalung entertained the public with their special numbers.
Fr Parvis John also congratulated both teaching and non-teaching staff for completing 25 years of imparting quality education to the community.
Recalling Nelson Mandela’s statement of one does not need atom bomb nor long-range missiles to destroy nations but lowering quality of education would, Fr. Parvis called for imparting quality education.
Imparting quality education goes far beyond college principals, staffs but we all are stakeholders, he said while driving home the essence of providing quality education for building a healthy community, society and nation.
It may be mentioned that Sentinel college was established in 1996 providing education in three streams namely commerce, arts and science. It provides science, arts and commerce till class XII and provides honours in BA English and Political honours.
