Libraries need adequate books on patriotism: RK Meghen

Stressing on the importance of libraries in society at a function, former UNLF chairman RK Meghen said that libraries should be a place to guide the youths towards a righteous path and make them responsible citizens in the future.

Former UNLF chairman RK Meghen on Saturday expressed that libraries need adequate books on patriotism and younger generations need to be encouraged to read them.

Meghen was speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of ‘Loyalam Public Library’ at Wangjing Hodamba Mayai Leikai in Thoubal district on Saturday.

Stressing on the importance of libraries in society, he said that libraries should be a place to guide the youths towards a righteous path and make them responsible citizens in the future.

There are many books in the libraries but they need to add more books, which gives a sense of patriotism and love for one’s motherland, besides those already prescribed for the syllabus of schools, colleges, universities, he said.

He further said that the world has now become a village with the advancement of technology. Information can be shared from any corner of the world, and the people must take this advantage of information and technology, he said.

He also stressed on the need to make all books available on electronic formats and urged the parents to let their children use smartphones judiciously.

He further pointed out that more translation works are required as they are in shortages.

Founder of Loyalam Public Library Sarat Salam who attended as the president at the function recalled that he struggled to have proper education during childhood. “The library was opened so that others do not have to go through a similar experience,” he said.

Sarat Salam has written around 35 books and contributed much to the field of Manipuri literature.

The occasion was attended by librarian, Manipur University of Culture Thounaojam Khomdon; former vice president of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Thoubal district branch Yengkhom Indira; president of Sahitya Seva Samiti Kakching Kshetri Bira; Kangleipak Loina-Sillon Apunba Marup president Thiyam Ongbi Silleima Leima and national board member, MSME, Government of India Robin Blackie as guests of honour.
