Lecture series on socio-economic conditions of Meiteis begins

MU assistant professor Th Bharat Singh said that the objective of the lecture series was to ascertain the condition of different communities in Manipur.

A fortnightly lecture series on ‘Socio Economic Condition of Meiteis in Manipur’ organised by Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP), Manipur was held at the CSSEIP conference hall on Thursday.

Manipur College assistant professor Nanjest Thongbam and Economics department head professor M Hemanta Meitei attended as resource persons of the lecture programme. CSSEIP director along with scholars and students of the university were present during the programme.

Speaking to the media, MU assistant professor Th Bharat Singh said that the objective of the lecture series was to ascertain the condition of different communities in Manipur. The two resource persons will produce papers on the historical growth of the Meitei community and their present condition in modern society, he said. 

“Meitei society was based on a clan system but with time various elements of social stratification led to new state formation,” he said. Bharat exuded confidence that the lecture programme will help unravel the dichotomies of Meitei society.

During the lecture, the resource persons presented papers which discussed socio-economic conditions of the Meiteis using varied data which included census reports, household survey data and housing characteristics among others.

Professor M Hemanta’s presentation focused on comparative study between three population samples - Meiteis, tribal and Muslim and their exponential growth based on available data while professor Nanjest focused on historical aspects and their correlation with the present state of the community.
