Manipur Education Minister Th Basanta Kumar on Thursday said that most of the infrastructure of Dhanamanjuri University (DMU) has been completed and will be inaugurated shortly.

The minister was clarifying the calling attention motion raised by Opposition MLAs Kh Joykisan Singh and Surjakumar Okram.

The Opposition MLAs, in a calling attention motion, told the House that DMU is in a weak position and at risk of being dissolved due to improper functioning such as the failure to appoint regular administrative posts.

Besides the teaching and non-teaching staff, the future career of students studying in the university is in vulnerable condition due to the lack of proper appointment of regular administrative staff of DMU, said Surjakumar.

The university is becoming just like a private college as the students are unable to get benefits of studying in a university as per norms of University Grant Commission (UGC), he added.

The Education minister informed the House that DMU was established on April 6, 2018 with five constituent colleges which are DM Science, DM Arts, DM Commerce, LMS law college and GP Women’s college as cluster university.

He said a regular vice chancellor has been appointed for the DMU and is already functioning. At present, around 600 teaching and non-teaching staff are working at DMU; however, the figure is not adequate for a university. To make a full-fledged university, more posts have been created and intake has been started since 2021. The process for intake of newly established posts has been sent to the government and if the government approves, then the result will be declared shortly, Basanta added.

He further said regarding the issues on the reported boycotting by the teachers of DMU, the state government has assured to fulfil the demands of teachers of the university.

On the next day, he assured the teachers that the demands will be fulfilled in time. Therefore, the boycott was not launched and classes including examination have been continuing smoothly, he said
