Taking note of the surging COVID-19 cases in the state, the All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) has appealed to the authorities of Manipur University to review the schedule of PG and UG terminal examination which is scheduled to begin from the first week of September.
AMSU was reacting to the time table and date of examination notified by the university for PG and UG students of Manipur, following the notification from University Grants Commission on July 6 that all universities should conduct the terminal examination within the month of September.
A release issued by Human Resource Development secretary of AMSU, Bruce Pebam on Monday stated that many have opposed the UGC notification and the case is being taken to the Supreme Court wherein the next hearing has been fixed for August 10. The Supreme Court has also intimated the Ministry of Home Affairs to declare its decision regarding the matter, it stated.
The release continued that conducting an examination at present will be risky and besides that it is not fair to conduct the examination when the syllabus is not completed. It is also not wise to conduct the examination when the students hardly get two months to attend classes out of the total six months semester, it stated.
Even though the UGC guidelines require universities to hold the examinations in online, offline or a blended mode, Manipur has not fixed a proper guideline on how the examinations are to be conducted, the release stated.
If at all the syllabus is condensed and marks are added based on the assignments given, it is still questionable whether the examinations can be conducted by following standard operating procedure. As such, an expert committee should be constituted to discuss any possible solution, the release added.
It is worth mentioning that the Delhi government and Maharashtra government had declared that the final year semester examination for their state will be cancelled.
Further, AMSU also appealed to the people of Manipur to follow proper guidelines given by WHO since the number of COVID- cases is increasing in the state wherein a possibility of community transmission has arrived.
