The Demand Committee on Upgradation of 50 MBBS Seats on behalf of the NEET (UG) 2020 qualified candidates has appealed to Chief Minister N Biren Singh to increase 50 more MBBS seats in JNIMS in the upcoming academic session.

The chief minister recently posted in social media that the Centre has approved 50 new MBBS seats in JNIMS, said secretary of the demand committee Johnson Kamei while speaking to the media on Tuesday at Manipur Press Club, Imphal.

Pointing out that around 1000 NEET (UG) qualified candidates are increasing every year in the state, he said that the number of candidates registered in the medical entrance examination as per NTA in 2019 is 6402 and in 2020 is 7049.

Of the 225 MBBS seats in RIMS and JNIMS, the state candidates get only 115 seats (85 in JNIMS and 30 in RIMS), said Johnson.

All has witnessed that many people were not able to get treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic in the state, which clearly shows that the strength of doctors in the state is less.  Moreover there are many dead cases of women in labour in far flung areas due to unavailability of doctors, he added.

Johnson further said that many candidates have even lost hope of becoming a doctor as there is a huge difference between the number of candidates and number of seats.

The demand committee has high hopes that the chief minister will consider the demands of the candidates as the chief minister has been working for the welfare of the students of the state, he added.
