The All Manipur Muslim Students’ Organisation (AMMSO) on Wednesday imposed an indefinite shutdown of administrative block and VC office of Manipur Technical University (MTU), and alleged the authority concerned of "selecting an unqualified candidate" as its vice chancellor.
In a statement, AMMSO stated that it had informed the governor of Manipur, chief minister N Biren, education minister, and commissioner of Higher and Technical Education in regards to the appointment of Bhabeswar Tongbram “who does not meet the criteria as the VC of MTU and inclusion of non-local candidates in the application of 32 assistant professors."
According to the notification issued on August 12, 2021 by registrar of MTU, the criteria for the selection of VC should be as per the UGC Regulation 2018, which the current VC Bhabeswar does not meet, it alleged.
Further accusing the MTU authority for denying the movement for the generating employment for the indigenous people, AMMSO decried the authority for including non-locals in the application of 32 assistant professors. AMMSO further alleged MTU authority of sending goons to threaten and bribe AMMSO to drop the issue, it mentioned.
Accusing the MTU authority for practicing nepotism and defaming the only technical university of the state, it questioned if the appointment of Bhabeswar has anything to do with pressure from the RSS. Although many student bodies have remained silent despite the absence of proper resolution, AMMSO will continue with the movement, it added.
Drawing the attention of the authorities concerned, AMMSO stated that the indefinite shut down of MTU shall remain until the demands are met.
