The Manipur government has directed all schools in Manipur that the eligible age of students in Class-I should be taken strictly as per the age range mandated in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

As per the NEP 2020, the "5-Foundational stage (3 years Anganwadi/Pre-School + 2 years in Primary of Grades 1-2" is 3 to 8 years; "3-Preparatory stage (Grades 3-5)" is 8 to 11 years; "3- Middle stage (Grades 6-8)" is 11 to 14 years; and "4- Secondary stage (Grades 9-12 that is 9 and 10 in the first and 11 and 12 in the second)" is 14 to 18 years, said an order issued by the director of Education (S) L Nandakumar.

It stated that the department came to know that some private schools in Manipur has not allowed the enrolment of children in Class-I after the completion of six years, while some schools put six years as eligible age. This has created confusions among parents in Manipur, it stated.

"However as per the guidelines of NEP 2020, the pedagogical restructuring of the school education is 5+3+3+4 corresponding to the age ranges of 3-8, 8-11, 11-14 and 14-18 years," it mentioned.

Non-compliance of the order will be viewed seriously, the order added.
