A total of 117 candidates have been selected by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre in India (TECC) for the annual Ministry of Education (MOE) Taiwan scholarship and the Huayu Enrichment scholarship. The number of students awarded last year was 74.
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre in India (TECC) announced the results of its annual Ministry of Education (MOE) Taiwan scholarship and the Huayu Enrichment scholarship on its website on May 31. This year the office received 350 applicants for the scholarships out of which 45 were selected for the MOE Taiwan scholarship and 72 for the
Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment scholarship out of 250 applicants.
The scholarship is open for students from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka and is a positive step to help students make their learning experience more convenient, particularly for Indian students. The MOE Taiwan scholarship is awarded to students wishing to pursue degree courses in Taiwan, at the Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral level. The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship is for students wishing to learn the Mandarin language in various universities in Taiwan.
In terms of distribution of applicants of Taiwan Scholarship, 42 are from Uttar Pradesh which are the most, followed by West Bengal with 31, and Bihar with 27. As to the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship, 70 applicants are from Delhi, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 27 and Bihar with 25. If we look at the university distribution, most of the pplicants are from University of Delhi, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jamia Milia Islamia.
Most Indian students choose National Taiwan University as top priority to pursue degree programme, followed by National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and Taipei Medical University. On the other hand, National Taiwan Normal University is the most favourite university to learn Huayu (Mandarin), followed by National Taiwan University and National Sun Yat-sen University.
Peters Chen, Director of Education Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India said, “Before obtaining the official award certificate, candidates should submit final admission to Education Division. Due to COVID-19 outbreak, currently there is border testriction to international students. We hope the restriction will be lifted soon and all candidates shall contact their universities in Taiwan for updated information in the near future. For visa application, you may follow the latest rules announced by Taiwanese government.
"When the COVID-19 vaccine is available, I also strongly suggest that candidates complete the required vaccinations and obtain the certificate to minimize the risk of infection. Safety is our top priority,” he added.
Taiwan offers courses in all fields and is quickly becoming one of the top destinations for Indian students wishing to study abroad. Taiwan’s MOE aims to have more academic cooperation with Indian universities and will keep working to further collaborate either through webinar, virtual students exchange programme or physical exchange programme in the future. Universities or colleges which have set up Taiwan Education Centres to conduct Mandarin courses by Taiwanese teachers will get more comprehensive information of collaboration from the teachers.
Meanwhile, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Amity University, Haryana and Education Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre in India (TECC) in New Delhi in February 2021 to establish a “Taiwan Education Centre” (TEC), with an aim to promote Mandarin course and academic collaboration between the two sides.
The signing ceremony held at the campus of the university was witnessed by Taiwan’s Representative to India, Ambassador Baushuan Ger and the Vice Chancellor of Amity University, Haryana, Prof. P.B. Sharma along with other faculty members.
