Omicron in India: Eight more cases detected in Maharashtra

Eight more COVID-19 cases of  the Omicron variant were detected in Maharashtra on Tuesday, taking the state's tally to 28, official sources said.

As per the media bulletin on COVID-19 issued by the state health department, out of the eight new Omicron cases detected on Tuesday, seven patients were from Mumbai while one was from Vasai Virar.

Among them, three were women and five others were men. They do not have any international travel history. It stated that three patients were asymptomatic while five patients showed mild symptoms. Their close contacts were being tracked. it added.

Maharashtra has so far reported 28 Omicron cases, including 12 from Mumbai, 10 from Pimpri Chinchwad, two from Pune Municipal Corporation, and one each from Kalyan Dombivali, Nagpur, Latur and Vasai Virar, according to the bulletin.

As per the bulletin, nine Omicron patients in Maharashtra have been discharged after negative RT PCR test.

On Tuesday, Delhi and Rajasthan also reported four Omicron cases each. 

With the four new cases, Omicron tally in Delhi reached six, of which, one patient was discharged from hospital after recovering from the infection, official sources said, adding that all Omicron patients in the national capital are stable with mild symptoms.

The first case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in the national capital was reported on December 5 after a 37-year-old man who returned from Tanzania tested positive for the new Covid-19 variant.

The patient who was admitted to Lok Nayak Hospital, has been discharged, sources said on Tuesday.

In Rajasthan, 13 cases of the new strain have so far been detected. As per official sources, all previous Omicron patients in the state have tested negative for COVID-19.

The other Omicron cases in India included three in Karnataka, four in Gujarat, one each in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Chandigarh.

Meanwhile, India recorded 5,784 new COVID-19 cases and 252 fatalities on Tuesday, taking the country's total count to 3,47,03,644 and death toll to 4,75,888.

With 7,995 recoveries, the total number of recovered cases in India reached 3,41,38,763 and the active cases stands at 88,993 as of Tuesday, as per the Union Health Ministry latest data.
