India records highest single-day COVID-19 spike in five months

The country witnessed a total tally of 46,951 new COVID-19 positive cases in the past 24 hours,

Amid the concern of COVID-19 second wave hitting India, the pandemic which was reportedly ebbing appears to have picked up pace again as the countrywide caseload has been increasing again since the past more than 10 days. The country witnessed a total tally of 46,951 new COVID-19 positive cases in the past 24 hours, the highest single-day spike since November 2020, as per the latest updates by the Union Health Ministry early Monday.

With the number of new infections rising, the countrywide COVID-19 caseload has reached 1,16,46,081, and the death toll has risen to 15,997 with 212 new deaths, while 1.11 crore people have recovered from the illness, according to the Union Health Ministry.

Maharashtra continues to lead in the total number of COVID-19 confirmed cases among all states and Union territories in the country with 24,79,682 cases. Lakshwadeep reported the lowest tally of confirmed cases at 666.
