During the function, a book “Andamanda Loi Thakhiba Athouba 23”, authored by Kakchingtabam Gunachandra Sharma, was also released.

RD and PR Minister Y Khemchand expressed gratitude to the central government for recognising Mount Manipur at Andaman Island and said he believes that the place would become a state function one day.

Rajya Sabha MP Sanajaoba Leishemba, assuring of state function at Mount Manipur, appealed to Minister Khemchand to look after the matter of maintaining cleanliness of BT Park.

Sanajaoba recalled that Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced this while addressing a public function at Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands on October 17, 2021. Mount Manipur was known as Mount Harriet, the third-highest island peak in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where Manipur’s Maharaja Kulchandra Singh and 22 other freedom fighters were imprisoned during the Anglo-Manipuri war (1891). The state will begin the construction of the memorial site very soon, he added.

The Anglo- Manipuri War of 1891 is one of the most important events in the history of Manipur. In the war against the British colonial expansion, many warriors of the tiny kingdom of Manipur laid down their lives to save the dignity, honour and sovereignty of their motherland despite the inevitable defeat against the mighty empire of the British. After the graceful defeat at the Battle of Khongjom where the Manipuri armies fought gallantly under Major Paona Brajabashi, Manipur lost its sovereignty to the British.
