Book on Nazrul Islam’s poems released

‘Nazrul Islam gi Seireng Khara’ (Some Poems of Nazrul Islam) a collection of Bengali poems written by Kazi Nazrul Islam translated into Manipuri by Jamuna Lairenjam was published.

A book release programme was organised at the hall of Khorirol Sanglen at Wangjing in Thoubal district on Friday in which three books were released, including a collection of Nazrul Islam’s poems.

The book release event which was divided into two sessions was participated by several eminent poets, writers, and literary figures of the state. 

In the first session, ‘Nazrul Islam gi Seireng Khara’ (Some Poems of Nazrul Islam) a collection of Bengali poems written by Kazi Nazrul Islam translated into Manipuri by Jamuna Lairenjam was published.

The book was published by Sanasam Bhorot on behalf of Khorirol Sandoklup Wangjing. ‘Najrul Islam gi Seireng Khara’ is a collection of 30 selected poems from Kazi Nazrul Islam's masterpiece ‘Sanchita’ which was originally written in Bengali.

The first session of the programme was attended by Manipuri Language Advisory Committee, Sahitya Academy New Delhi convenor Nongmaithem Kirankumar as the chief guest, Khorirol Sandoklup Wangjing president Tongbram Babulal as president, along with Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Thoubal District branch president Moirangthem Rajendra, Sahitya Yokahtlup Tentha president Kartik Maiba and Ningol Khut Manipur Wangjing president Khundongbam Gunamani as guests of honour.

On the occasion, Jamuna said that she had decided to translate the poems from Nazarul Islam's Masterpiece ‘Sanchit’ as she wanted to present Nazrul Islam’s famous lines to Manipuri literature. As part of the occasion, critic Sanasam Nabadweep delivered a talk about the book.

It can be mentioned that Jamuna Lairenjam who was the headmistress of a Manipur Government High School, was born at Chandpur in the Cachar district of Assam in 1960. She married Ningthou Naoriya who is a college lecturer and a writer from Tentha in Thoubal district. She learned in Bangla medium during her school days. She also learned Hindi, Sanskrit, and Assamese languages.

She used to write and publish poems in college magazines. The ‘Nazrul Islam gi Seireng Khara’ was her first complete version of translation work. Jamuna Lairenjam had also written two poetry books namely ‘Nang na Chatkhraba Tungda’ (After dear departed)’ and ‘Ganga gi Echel’ (Torrents of Ganga). Jamuna Lairenjam had been honoured and awarded by International Bengali Channel NRB News 24.Com for translating Kazi Nazrul Islam’s poems into Manipuri.

In the second session, two books of plays (dramas) namely ‘Tabunungdagi’ and ‘Malla Malla Leinungshi’ written by Shanto M were released.
