'Support will be given in promotion of tubers crops in Manipur’

ICAR-CTCRI Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala director MN Sheela said that among the Northeastern states, CAU Imphal is performing well in promotion of tropical tuber crops and the centre should continue in supporting farmers until the promotion level reaches to a maximum scale.

ICAR-CTCRI Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala director MN Sheela on Tuesday assured to extend support in promoting and popularising tropical tuber crops in Manipur.

Sheela made the assurance during the valedictory function of two-day state level Trainers' Training programme on Tuber Crops and their Prospects in Northeastern states organised by All India Coordinated Research Project-Tuber Crops, Central Agricultural University (AICRP-Tuber Crops, CAU), Imphal at conference hall of CAU, Imphal.

Attending the function as chief guest, Sheela said that among the Northeastern states, CAU Imphal is performing well in promotion of tropical tuber crops. The centre should continue in supporting farmers until the promotion level reaches to a maximum scale, she said.

Expressing happiness on seeing large scale tapioca cultivation in Kangpokpi, Ukhrul and Kamjong, she assured to provide support in conducting vocational training and formation of FPO in connection with promotion and popularisation of tropical tuber crops.

Principal investigator AICRP-Tuber Crops CAU Imphal, AK Bijaya said that a park for tuber crops will be set up soon in premises of Central Agricultural University, Iroishemba to popularise this varieties of crops in the state.

She said that considering the potential in the state for farming of tuber crops, the Centre has been promoting tuber crops through training and awareness programmes since 2006.

As a result, many farmers started cultivating tropical tubers crops in the state, she added.

She said that under the guidance of CAU centre, farmers have started cultivating tropical tuber crops in many districts such as Churachandpur, Ukhrul, Kangpokpi, Imphal West and Imphal East.

The Centre has been planning to set up one processing unit at Kangpokpi for tuber crops so that cultivated tuber crops can be sold as processed items like chips etc. which can be a good source of income to farmers.

Bijaya also pointed out that the Centre has been focusing on collection, characterisation and evaluation of various species of tuber crops to identify the most suitable varieties and popularise them. Besides, the centre also produced a new variety of ‘Umangra’ (cassava) named 'CAU-Umangra 1’.

As a part of the programme, certificates were also distributed to participants of the training programme.
