Re-digging of canals right step for poor farmers: Minister Radheshyam

While the fight against dreaded COVID-19 goes on like a World War III, re-digging of canals is the right step for poor farmers as agricultural season is approaching, Education, Labour and Employment Minister Thokchom Radheshyam said on Thursday.

“We have struggled with COVID-19, but on the other hand, agricultural season is also approaching, re-digging of canals is the right step for the poor farmers towards producing high yielding of agricultural products,” he said.

The minister, who is also the MLA of Heirok AC, was speaking while inspecting a mammoth work of re-digging Nongdambi canal, an irrigational canal located at Salungpham meant for making water available to the local farmers there. The work was being taken up under the MLA Local Area Development Fund by the committee of MLALADF, Heirok AC.

For the developmental works of Heirok AC to be taken up in the list, the minister reiterated that the roads of Salungpham will be black topped at the earliest. ”For this, we should go hand in hand,” he added.

The minister also lauded the committee for successfully completing the Herculean task of re-digging the canal started from Nongpok Sekmai to Salungpham within a short time.

The committee convenor Laishram Thamboi informed that the task was started on May 11 last and have concluded on Wednesday. Similarly re-digging of different irrigational canals of Heirok AC has been undergoing at war footing at different places. “We have struggled with COVID-19, but on the other hand, agricultural season is also approaching, re-digging of canals is the right step for the poor farmers towards producing high yeilding of agricultural products,” he added.

The minister also said, “With no medicine for COVID-19, we are in a stage of living together with the virus. Only social distancing, sanitizing frequently, etc can make the virus go away, we should help each other in combating the disease, he added.

Clarifying the allegations made against the government while bringing back those stranded Manipuris outside the state, the minister who is also the spokesperson of the government briefed the media that “those stranded are all our dear ones, brothers and sisters. It is the duty of the government to bring them back so that all their anxieties and hardships while staying outside may come to an end.”

The government has seriously taken up the issue of increasing active COVID-19 patients in the state, he added.
