Khamasom Walely village declared as Honey Bee village

Khamasom Walely village was declared as Honey Bee village on March 5 by MP RK Ranjan, deputy commissioner of Ukhrul Joseph Pauline Kamson and vice president of Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur, AIMS stated on Wednesday.

The naming ceremony was organised by ICAR Research Complex for NEH region Manipur centre (KVK-Ukhrul), AIMS and Khamasom Walely village authority, a release stated. The programme commenced with an introduction from principal, Yang Academy K Varieyo which was followed by species from other dignitaries, it stated.

In his keynote address, head of KVK, Ukhrul Solei Luram highlighted the reasons why Khamasom Walely village is a honey Bee village, it added. “The village is the centre of seven cluster villages, and therefore, it naturally has the rare distinction of being endowed with a virgin forest that enables the availability of flowers throughout the year, which fulfils the prerequisite condition for the success of the honey bee project,” it stated. Khamasom Walely village is geographically, socially, economically and culturally most suitable to be declared as a bee village, it added.

The release stated that as a part of the event, a memorandum was also submitted for the opening of a National Slopeland Honey Bee Research Institute at the village, and RK Ranjan expressed his opinion that the establishment of the institute would pave the way for revolutionizing the village’s subsistence farming to sustainable farming.

The release further mentioned that RK Ranjan will initiate the National Slopeland through the line departments. He also mentioned his vision to develop the latest innovative and scientific methods for apiculture while urging the masses for ‘one village one product’ as a part of PM Narendra Modi’s initiative, it stated.

The programme was followed by a mass plantation and awareness programme of Yongchak at Khamasom Phungrei, and cane and bamboo at Khamasom Khamasom Phumgdar, it added.
