In observation of World Hepatitis Day (WHD), Shija Hospitals and the Research Institute (SHRI) in association with CORE Diagnostics organised a Free Hepatitis B and C Screening Camp at the premises of Shija Hospital on Wednesday.
SHRI in a release signed by its manager (Business Development) L Premjit stated that WHD is observed each year on July 28 to raise awareness of viral hepatitis that the camp and the theme this year is ‘Hepatitis Can’t Wait’.
The medical camp was organised with the objective of raising awareness of viral hepatitis amongst the masses. A total of 100 individuals including staff of the hospital availed the opportunity of free testing during the screening camp, SHRI stated.
It also mentioned that SHRI has been actively involved in organising hepatitis sensitisation programmes and free camps for the general public. To further the cause and protect its staff, the hospital also makes it obligatory for every new employee to undergo a compulsory hepatitis immunisation programme, SHRI added.
SHRI further pointed out that Hepatitis B and C are the most common cause of deaths across the world claiming 1.1 million lives and 3 million new infections each year. Yet, almost 90 per cent of people living with viral hepatitis are unaware that they are infected by the virus, and if left undiagnosed, viral hepatitis can be deadly, it stated.
“No one should have to live with this infection without a diagnosis; so do not wait and get tested. A hepatitis-free future is possible with united efforts,” SHRI appealed.
