In continuation of its long drawn efforts to promote afforestation and create awareness among the locals regarding the benefits of tree plantation, the 44 Assam Rifles under the aegis of 22 Sector IGAR (E) on Sunday organised a plantation drive at different places of Tamenglong district in Manipur.
The security personnel planted as many as 520 saplings on Sunday in the HQ camp complex Tamenglong and at Azuram village, in the effort to prevent soil erosion and landslide, the 44 Assam Rifles Adjutant said.
Pointing out that the recent development works in Tamenglong district has brought a new opportunity and challenge for its residents, he said the onus rests on all residents to protect this fragile ecosystem, so that the future generations have a place to call home. All residents must make concrete efforts to save the fragile ecology of Tamenglong, he said.
In spreading awareness and working together with locals, the Assam Rifles desires to initiate a change for sustainable development in the region, he said, adding that the flora and fauna of an area are interdependent in an ecosystem and trees are the most benevolent givers in nature.
"They not only provide delicious fruits, flowers but, provide natural habitat to several species of animals, birds, and insects. Thus, the destruction of a tree implies the destruction of an entire ecosystem.
“This makes it crucial for us to understand how significant trees are to life on earth and what we can do to counter the problem of their depleting numbers and all the associated challenges that follows deforestation," the Adjutant said.
The Noney Battalion also organised tree plantation drives at Noney, Kotlen, Tupul, Haochong, Awangkhul, Khongsang and Nungba. Noney Battalion has also been the forerunner in promoting such environment friendly initiative and tree plantation drives for ensuring a sustainable environment. The troops of Noney Battalion have taken the step to fulfill its commitment towards a clean and green environment.
