The Manipur Government on Sunday extended the night curfew timing from 7 pm to 5 am against the earlier order of 8 pm to 4 am amid the rising number of daily COVID-19 positive cases in the state.

The development followed after a review meeting of the State Consultative Committee for COVID-19 chaired by Chief Minister N Biren Singh was held on Sunday evening to review the prevailing situation in the state.

An order to extend the curfew was issued by the Home department late in the night. In addition to that, a highly reliable source stated that schools and colleges are likely to be closed as preventive measures against COVID-19.

“Chaired a meeting of State Consultative Committee for COVID-19 today. Discussed on many issues on the COVID-19 second wave in the state. Took decisions on social gathering, partial lockdowns, markets opening timing, official programmes, re-engagement of nurses and MTS etc,” tweeted the chief minister.

Subsequently, the Chief Minister Office also issued an advisory late in the evening on social gatherings.

“The present situation arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic has been a cause for alarm in recent days. As gatherings for various reasons are potential sources for spreading the virus, all cabinet ministers, legislators and government functionaries are advised to refrain from organizing, participating in or promoting, in any manner whatsoever, events or functions by whatever name called, which will create or attract, or are likely to create or attract public gathering of any size,” stated Ningthoujam Geoffrey, secretary to chief minister.

The state on Sunday recorded 72 new COVID-19 positive cases, a jump from Saturday’s figure of 39, pushing the statewide confirmed tally of the infection to 29,721 cases, according to the state health department.

Of the 72 new COVID-19 positive cases, 21 are personnel of the Central Armed Police Force, stated a release from the Common COVID-19 Control Room.

With the new positive cases, the cumulative number of active cases rose to 255 from 190 on Saturday. However, COVID-19 death toll in the state remained 376 as no COVID-19 related death was reported on Sunday.
