West Jaintia Hills imposes prohibitory order amid surge in COVID-19 cases

All shops, restaurants and bars in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya to close by 9 pm.

The West Jaintia Hills district administration has imposed a prohibitory order with immediate effect in view of the surge in the number of Covid-19 cases in many states of the country.

The order was issued on Monday putting in place preventive measures and awareness, to identify and take stringent steps to ensure social distancing to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in the district.

In his order, the district magistrate has prohibited all forms of large public gathering and congregation including social, political, entertainment, academic, cultural, religious functions etc. Any assembly whatsoever and while enforcing this, every individual to mandatorily maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet, to wear face masks, respiratory etiquette and to strictly follow  the various protocols and advisories of the Government in the Health and Family Welfare Department at all times with effect.

The order also prohibits moving in public, work places, shops and during transport without a mask where a fine of up to Rs 1000 will be imposed on any violator, spitting and consumption of liquor, pan, gutka, tobacco etc in public places.

The order also states that there should be universal compliance to the rules which also include adherence to social distancing of 6 feet in all public places. All shops, restaurants and bars in the district are to close by 9 pm. All residents of the district have also been directed to maintain Covid appropriate behaviour.

Attendance in congregations has been brought down to 50 per cent and all hotels are to insist on the submission of Covid Negative Certificate for those tourists arriving from outside the state.

With regard to public transport, operators are to ensure that they do not ferry people beyond the permitted seating capacity.
