‘COVID-19 is now endemic in Tamenglong district’

The number of COVID-19 positive cases have surged to three after dipping to zero in Tamenglong district.

The number of COVID-19 positive cases have surged to three after dipping to zero in Tamenglong district.

One person with no travel history was found to be COVID-19 positive from Tamenglong Ward No II Namlalong village. She recovered on April 3. One more COVID-19 positive case was detected from a student after he returned from Easter Sunday holiday on April 5. Another two COVID-19 positive cases were confirmed from a couple on Tuesday.

Following the confirmation of COVID-19 cases, the additional district magistrate of Tamenglong declared the whole building of the residence of Janthuiyang, Chingkhiulong (Opposite PNB ATM) Tamenglong HQ Ward no.(V) as ‘containment zone’ with immediate effect to prevent the spread of the disease. He said that any person(s)/institution(s)/organisation(s) found violating any of the containment measures shall be deemed to have committed an offence punishable under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860. SDM/EM Tamenglong is empowered to executive magistrate in Tamenglong Headquarters to oversee the law and order situation, he added.

Currently, the total number of COVID-19 positive cases has climbed to 1,480 with seven deaths and 1,470 recoveries till today.

Speaking to Imphal Free Press at his office, CMO of Tamenglong, Dr Chambo Gonmei said that COVID-19 is now endemic in Tamenglong district. He strongly appealed to all the people of Tamenglong to strictly follow the Jan Andolan for COVID-19 Appropriate Behaviour launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also urged all the passengers who are coming from outside the district and state to get tested for COVID-19 at a health institution or where there is COVID testing facility. He also appealed to people with age groups of 45 and above to get vaccinated which is free of cost.

The CMO emphasised the need to take action against the people who do not wear masks in public places and suggested closing down of schools and institutions for another two-three weeks. During such situations, the public should make sure that they do not mingle with any person, whether friends, family members, relatives, businessmen, migrant workers and others, he added.
