MBBS student found hanging in Imphal

An MBBS student pursuing his 5th semester at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Imphal was found hanging Monday morning at his hostel room in a suspicious manner, sources said.

The deceased, Sanaton Athokpam, 22, son of Tikendra of Khurai Thangjam Leikai was staying in Room No C/15, Hostel No 3 of Gent’s Hostel at RIMS, Lamphel, the sources said.

The sources said that around 10.30 am Monday, he did not give any response from his room when his friends called him at lunch time. They thought that he must have studied till late last night and was probably sleeping at that time.

However, their suspicions grew as he did not come out from his room till 1 pm and four of his friends resorted to kicking down the door only to find him hanging from the ceiling fan. Sanaton was rushed to RIMS casualty by the students but doctors declared him brought dead.

On receiving the information of the death, OC Lamphel arrived at RIMS casualty. Students also gathered at the hospital. The mortal remains of the deceased has been transported to JNIMS mortuary.

According to the sources, the deceased was found hanging in his room with both his hands tied at the back. Moreover, injury marks were reportedly observed on his body.

IG (zone-1) Manipur Police K Jayenta and SP Imphal West K Meghachandra also arrived at RIMS for inspection and also went to investigate the room where he was found hanging.

During the investigation, a plastic stool was found broken, sources said. Bits of nylon strings were found hanging from the ceiling fan. Little damage was found on the door though his friends had kicked it down to enter, the sources said.

Police suspect that there were signs of struggle and strangulation inside Sanaton’s room. The four students who claimed to have kicked down the door were picked up for questioning.

His family members said Sanaton secured 6th position in his HSLC examination and ranked 4th position in Class 12 examination.
