Protest staged against planting of bomb at residence

An improvised explosive device (IED) was found at the residence of one Abdul Kalam Sheik on Tuesday at about 12.15 am.

Locals of Keshtri Mayai Leikai on Tuesday staged a sit-in-protest at Keshtri Mayai Leikai, Imphal East, decrying the planting of an improvised explosive device (IED) at the residence of one Abdul Kalam Sheik.

The bomb was found at the residence of Abdul Kalam Sheik on Tuesday at about 12.15 am. As per sources, Abdul is the proprietor of a furniture store opened at his residence. A team of district police rushed to the spot at about 12.40 am of the same day and recovered the IED. Later, the explosive was disposed of at Awa hill safely at about 9 am. Police claimed that the IED weighed about 1.8 kilogram.

Speaking on the sideline of the protest, a protester named Thoibi Naorem strongly condemned the act of planting bombs at a residence. “There are many carpenters staying in the shop. Many could have faced casualties had the bomb exploded,” she further said while adding there are people who have chronic disease including  a heart patient, infants and others in the colony. She said the miscreants should immediately clarify why the bomb was planted in a populated area.
