Manipur is all geared up to join the rest of the country for the much-awaited COVID-19 vaccination drive that will be launched across all states and Union territories on Saturday. The nationwide COVID-19 immunisation drive is expected to cover three crore frontline healthcare workers across 3,006 sites. How many frontline healthcare workers in Manipur will be covered? How many vials of COVID-19 have been allotted to Manipur?

Manipur on Wednesday received 54,000 doses of Covishield from SII, Pune, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said. Chief Minister N Biren Singh, advisor to the chief minister (health) Sapam Ranjan, director Health Services Dr K Rajo, chief secretary Rajesh Kumar and other officials received the vaccine at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport, Imphal.

Who will get the COVID-19 vaccine on Saturday?

Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that priority for vaccination will be given to frontline healthcare workers and COVID warriors of the state.

Manipur has identified a total of 39,991 healthcare workers (HCW), including from private and government hospitals, Anganwadi workers and helpers, Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS) supervisors and Child Development Project Officers (CDPOs) for COVID-19 vaccination, state nodal officer (Immunisation) Dr Th Nandakishore said.

CM Biren said that 9,617 healthcare workers of the state will be vaccinated at 10 selected sites across the state in the first phase.

The chief minister said 1,831 healthcare workers from the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS); 3,136 from Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS);  210 from Senapati district headquarters; 318  from Churachandpur; 473 from Ukhrul; 261 from Chandel; 297 from Bishnupur; 394 from Thoubal; 436 from Tamenglong and 1,120 from Shija Hospital Imphal have been identified for vaccination.

How will the vaccination drive be conducted?

“Vaccination will be conducted systematically and there will be no favouritism and nepotism in vaccination,” the chief minister said while briefing the media on receiving the vaccine on January 13.

The COVID-19 vaccination programme will be rolled out in 10 centres across the state on January 16. The first phase of the vaccination programme will be launched by Chief Minister N Biren Singh at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal at 11 am.

At least 10 doctors will be vaccinated during the launch of the vaccination drive.

Is the COVID-19 vaccination free for the people of Manipur?

On January 2, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan announced that COVID-19 vaccine will be free of cost across the country. He said one crore healthcare workers and two crore frontline workers would be given free vaccines in the first phase of the COVID-19 vaccination drive. The union health minister added that the details of how the remaining 27 crore priority beneficiaries will be vaccinated till July are being finalised.

However, Additional director and spokesperson, Health Services, Manipur, Dr Khoirom Sasheekumar Mangang said on Friday the state government will follow the rules set by the Central government that vaccines should be administered free of cost to frontline workers and healthcare workers.

However, the state government may take up initiatives to provide the vaccine at minimal cost for those who are not included in these groups (frontline workers and health care workers) under a certain criteria, he said.

What is the daily vaccination target?

After the launch, only 100 persons will be vaccinated per day in a centre. Health experts will closely monitor all the vaccinated persons from pre to the post vaccination stage, Additional chief secretary P Vaiphei said.

The vaccination programme for health workers is likely to complete within 80 days.

How many COVID-19 vaccine storage facilities are in Manipur? 

Manipur has two storage containers of the COVID vaccine with each having the capacity to store more than three lakhs vaccine and 12 vans for transportation of vaccines. The state has altogether 126 cold chain points in various districts, state State nodal officer (Immunisation), Dr Th Nandakishore said.

What next after you are vaccinated?

Data of people vaccinated will be uploaded in real-time on the Co-Win platform, developed by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry to facilitate real-time information of vaccine stocks, storage temperature and individualized tracking of beneficiaries for COVID-19 vaccine.

Once vaccinated, the beneficiary will receive a digital certificate. A final digital certificate will be generated after the second dose.
